Louis Van Gaal Sacked

FC Bayern have this morning confirmed under-fire coach Louis Van Gaal has left the club with immediate effect.

Van Gaal’s men slipped in to fourth place in the Bundesliga after a 1-1 draw with rivals Nurnberg on Saturday.

A statement from FC Bayern said: “We took the decision as the slip into fourth place does not reach the minimum goal for the team which is to finish in the UEFA Champions League positions.”

Formally a coach at Ajax, Barcelona and AZ Alkmaar, Van Gaal joined Bayern at the start of the 2009-10 season and led the Bavarian giants to a domestic double and a Champions League final, losing out to Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu in May.

However, this season has left a lot to be desired for FC Bayern and Saturday’s slump at Nurnberg puts their Champions League ambitions under-threat in what will be a fierce tussle with Hannover 96.

Van Gaal’s men were also dumped out of the Champions League in the last 16 after losing to Inter Milan on away goals.

48-year-old Andries Jonker will replace Van Gaal until the end of the season and has five Bundesliga matches to save Bayern’s season.

Leverkusen’s Jupp Heynckes will take over from Jonker as head coach at the end of the season.
